An estimated 1,100 years old! An impressive giant tree that stands 48 meters tall
Located within the grounds of Otoshi Shrine in Tsutsuga, Akiota Town, this tree is designated a natural monument by Hiroshima Prefecture. Estimated to be over 1,100 years old, it is known as a historic giant tree that has watched over this land since the Heian period.
Its most striking feature is its impressive scale, standing approximately 48 meters tall and measuring 8.2 meters in circumference (eye diameter). The peak viewing season is usually from late October to mid-November, when the entire tree is bathed in vibrant yellow. Another major attraction is the thick yellow leaves that cover the ground as the leaves fall, creating a sea of color all around.
During the autumn foliage season, the tree is typically illuminated at night, allowing visitors to admire the tree illuminated against the night sky, a stark contrast to its daytime appearance. Because the tree is located in the mountains at a high altitude, it is recommended to wear winter gear, especially when visiting at night or during the leaf-fall season. With a presence that dates back over 1,000 years, this is a scenic spot that represents Akiota Town, where you can feel the deepening of autumn.
