Traditional festival to pray for the safety of cattle and horses and to raise fire on a 20-meter pine tree

This traditional fire festival, which prays for the safety of cattle and horses, is said to have begun in 1724. When a torch is thrown to the top of a 20-meter-tall pillar pine and the fire spreads to the pot, flames shoot up into the night sky and sparks fall, creating a spectacular sight. The Suo Sosei pillar pine, known as the Three Pine Trees of Sosei, are held on August 15th in the Sosei Nakamura district, August 19th in the Sosei Yamada district, and August 23rd in the Sosei Ochiai district, and are designated as Important Intangible Folk Cultural Properties as a rare example of the traditional character of the area.
