The only one in Japan! A hands-on museum run by the Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force where you can see the inside of a giant submarine
This historical museum, located near Kure Port, is marked by the gigantic 76.2-meter-long submarine "Akishio." It displays an actual submarine, which protected Japan's seas until 2004, on land, and is known as the only facility in Japan where visitors can tour its interior.
The museum is divided into three floors. The first floor, "The History of the Maritime Self-Defense Force," introduces the organization's history through panels and materials. The second floor, "The Activities of Minesweepers," provides a detailed explanation of minesweeping techniques used to remove underwater mines, using actual minesweeping equipment, mines, and videos.
The third floor, "The Activities of Submarines," displays the structure of the submarine and what life was like on board. The highlight of the museum is the boarding experience, where visitors can enter the interior of the submarine "Akishio" via a connecting corridor. The captain's cabin, officers' quarters, and command center are open to the public. Visitors can peer through a real periscope and sit in the helm, realistically experiencing the tense atmosphere of the ship's days. (Please note that the helm seat may not be available on some days.)
To conclude your tour, we recommend stopping by the cafe next to the shop for a bite to eat "Akishio Curry" (limited quantity available), a dish approved by the 10th captain of the ship. This is a great spot to learn more about the history of Kure and the activities of the Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force.
