When you get tired of everyday life, memories of travel suddenly come back.
Sometimes even the seemingly trivial things are the most memorable like, “The tea I drank while watching the autumn leaves in that garden was curiously delicious…” and “Wasn’t it amazing when I hit the bullseye the first time I tried kyudo archery?”
That’s why we’re introducing you to places that focus on “experiences” where you can look back on your trip and say “I did that.” All of these are experience packages that are popular with tourists from overseas.
Experience wabi-sabi in Hiroshima’s most famous garden. Learn about the history of Hiroshima which is known as the “City of Peace” and about its road to reconstruction while thinking about the people who live here. Kyudo archery and trying to make Hiroshima’s signature dish “okonomiyaki” are great experiences for anyone looking for a change of pace.
So, why not come and experience all that Hiroshima has to offer?

Experience A Unique Moment inside a Garden of a Japanese Lord with Easy Access
Shukkei-en is a historic garden that once belonged to a Japanese lord known as a “daimyo”. It was built in 1620 and is located in the heart of Hiroshima City. It was destroyed in a fire during the Edo period but a major restoration took place immediately after the fire giving it the same look it has today. It was also greatly damaged by the atomic bomb, but was again restored and improved since then and celebrated its 400th anniversary in 2020.
Its highlight is the lush natural scenery created by overlapping plants that change with the season. Plants such as cherry and peach blossom trees in spring, trees with freshly sprouted leaves in summer, the crimson leaves of autumn, and winter’s ume trees and camellia flowers are some of the variety of seasonal plant life that colors the park and brings beauty to its tranquility. It is also illuminated during the cherry blossom and autumn foliage seasons drawing in large crowds from around Japan and the world. Colorful koi swim in the pond which visitors can feed.
Shukkei-en is an elegant garden where you can experience wabi-sabi, a traditional way of thinking in Japanese aesthetics. Here is also holds tea ceremonies in line with seasonal events and flowers. Enjoy the experience of traditional tea and confections while getting in touch with Japanese culture.

Experience Making Hiroshima’s Signature Dish Okonomiyaki
A classic Hiroshima food is okonomiyaki. Not only can you eat it in Hiroshima, but at OKOSTA you can eat okonomiyaki that you made yourself. A workshop is run by Otafuku Sauce, a leading producer and seller of okonomi sauce and okonomiyaki products based in Hiroshima.
This experience uses the same sauce, iron plate grill, spatula, and other tools that local okonomiyaki restaurants use, making it popular with tourists from overseas as well as kids.
Rather than simply being shown how to fry it, you will be taught various tips to make it more delicious, such as a technique to bring out the sweetness of the cabbage or how much frying time is needed, so that even first-timers can enjoy it with ease.
In the standard okonomiyaki experience, you can make your own original okonomiyaki by choosing your favorites from 5 types of toppings: squid tempura, green onions, tomato & cheese, spicy noodles, and seasonal ingredients.
After cooking the real thing, you can fully enjoy okonomiyaki that you made yourself. You can also choose from various okonomi sauces and buy some more from the souvenir section after trying them.

Experience a New Attraction in Hiroshima that Uses Origami Cranes
Located in front of the Atomic Bomb Dome, this is a new attraction in Hiroshima that has been visited by many tourists from around the world.
From the observation deck, 50m above the ground, you can see the Atomic Bomb Dome and a beautiful panorama of the city all while feeling the breeze in a freeing space without windows.
Orizuru Square is on the 12th floor and here you can fold your own origami paper crane in an experience unique to Orizuru Tower. Orizuru Wall is a space where paper cranes are dropped from a height of 50m and pile up to form a wall made of hopes for peace. You can also enjoy the sight of paper cranes swirling down through the glass case. In addition, you can try a digital attraction where you are projected onto a big screen as a paper crane and fly around the city of Hiroshima.
We also recommend the Sampo spiral slope where you can walk up or down the 450m sloping path while viewing works by 9 artists connected to Hiroshima. The spiral slope allows you to go from the ground floor all the way up to the observation deck with an open feeling that changes depending on the direction you go. There is also a slide in the middle of the slope for both children and adults to enjoy swirling down on.
There are also cafes and shops with well-known locally produced goods from around Hiroshima Prefecture. This is a must-see spot while sightseeing in Hiroshima.

Sha-Raku is a new activity center that has become increasingly popular recently. It was awarded 4th place in the Top Overall Experiences category of TripAdvisor’s 2022 Traveler’s Choice Best of the Best for all of Japan.
It is the only attraction in Hiroshima where you can try kyudo by shooting using a Japanese bow and arrow. Sha-Raku takes elements of traditional Yaba style archery and revives them in a modern arrangement. You can feel the history of pre-war Hiroshima and enjoy Japanese culture and archery, all in a casual atmosphere. For that reason, it’s become a popular spot for people of all ages, genders, nationalities, and levels of experience.
The sensation of shooting an arrow, the challenge of trying to hit the target, and the exhilaration of hitting it are all feelings that only those who experience kyudo can understand. You can also receive an original “bull’s eye” sticker that goes with the last grade you got.

Bar Hopping in Nostalgic Nightlife
13-2 Osugacho, Minami Ward, Hiroshima City, Hiroshima Prefecture 732-0821
About a 5-minute walk from the South Exit of Hiroshima Station, Ekinishi is a unique area of renovated houses and shops from the Showa Period compared to the dazzling neon signs of the Nagarekawa Area. Ever since the Shinjuku Golden Gai of Tokyo was added to the Michelin Green Guide Japan in 2009, places where you can feel the good old days of Japan have become popular and for that reason, many people have also come to this part of Hiroshima for its deep atmosphere.
There are many places where you can try specialties of Hiroshima such as oysters and locally produced vegetables and sake. However, it is also packed with 41 businesses serving a wide variety of foods like teppanyaki, bars, Italian, Thai, wild game, and Korean, making it an ideal place for bar hopping without ever getting bored. Because it’s close to Hiroshima Station it’s often crowded with workers, tourists, and lone travelers visiting the city on business.
