Kashima has little flat land, steep mountains, and weathered granite soil, so stone walls had to be built to turn it into farmland. The shape of the stone walls resembles a pyramid, and so they were chosen as the "Dandanbatake Pyramid" in the "6th Beautiful Japanese Village Landscape Contest" sponsored by the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries.
