At the western foot of the central volcano in Kurahashi Town, a pine forest with deep greenery and a white sandy beach stretches out. It is an ancient scenic spot where Oishi Minomaro, an envoy to Silla, is said to have stayed overnight here and composed eight poems for the fifteenth volume of the Manyoshu, and a monument to the poem, the Manyoshu Ruins Nagato Island Monument, remains. Selected as one of the "100 Best White Sands and Green Pines in Japan" and "100 Best Beaches in Japan," the spectacular scenery described in the poem still retains the same charm as it did in the past.
