It is said that Toyotomi Hideyoshi ordered Kiyomasa Kato to build the huge stone-walled precincts of the precincts. In the precincts, there is also the Tokarezuka and the tomb of Kurita Kakudo, which was built to commemorate the 100th anniversary of Basho's death.

Located in the Mitarai Townscape Preservation District, this green temple was built by Taira no Kiyomori and the Kannon Hall was rebuilt in 1718 (Kyōhō 3). Within the temple grounds are many things closely related to haiku, such as the "Tadare-kare-zuka" (Someone's Tomb), built on the 100th anniversary of Basho's death, and the grave of Kurita Chodō, a central figure in the Iyo haiku world and a close friend of Kobayashi Issa. Legend has it that the huge stone walls around the perimeter are the remains of a castle that Toyotomi Hideyoshi had Kato Kiyomasa build when he invaded Shikoku.
