A monument commemorating the martyrdom of Captain Sakuma, who died during training for Submarine No. 6 off the coast of Iwakuni City, Yamaguchi Prefecture.

The 6th Submarine Martyrs Memorial Monument was erected in memory of Captain Sakuma, who sank during training off the coast of Yamaguchi Prefecture aboard Japan's first domestically manufactured submarine and was featured in prewar textbooks as a "man of valor." Also, on the southern slope, the residence of the Kure Naval Arsenal chief at the time, a representative example of Japanese architecture from the Meiji period, remains as it was.
