Opened in 1890 as a burial ground for naval personnel, the site is home to gravestones for British sailors and others erected before the war, a monument to those killed in battle on the Yamato battleship, and a memorial monument praying for lasting peace. In 1986, the site was combined with city land to create Nagasako Park, covering an area of approximately 2.9 hectares, which is now visited by many people.
