Museum of Tone, a heavy cruiser that suffered an air raid in the depths of Etajima Bay at the end of the Pacific War

Towards the end of the Pacific War, the heavy cruiser Tone, which had taken refuge and been anchored in the inner part of Etajima Bay, was attacked by a large formation of US military aircraft from July 24, 1945, resulting in the deaths of 128 crew members and the ship being wrecked off the coast of Totoga-hana in the evening of the 28th. The air raid also caused extensive damage within the town. In March 1965, the Memorial Monument Construction Committee was formed, with the participation of survivors and surviving families, to erect a memorial, and the first memorial service was held on July 25 of the same year. After that, a preservation society was formed, the area around the monument was designated Tone Park, and the Warship Tone Museum was constructed in August 1987.
