A nationally designated historic site filled with the romance of history, where a medieval mountain castle remains to this day

Located on Mount Kagami, at an elevation of 260-330 meters, near the center of the Saijo Basin, the ruins of Kagamiyama Castle are a medieval mountain castle that retains strong traces of the Sengoku period. The summit is home to the former Gotemba, where remains such as the kuruwa (baileys) known as Naka-no-daba and Shimo-daba, as well as a group of ridged moats and wells, are well-preserved. These precious remains have been recognized as a national historic site.
Kagamiyama Castle was built by the Ouchi clan, based in Yamaguchi, during the Muromachi period. In 1523, the Ouchi and Amago clans fought a fierce battle over the castle, and it is said that Mori Motonari, who would later rule the Chugoku region, played a key role here. The breath of history can still be felt in this land where Sengoku heroes roamed.
Climbing the mountain path brimming with nature, you can experience the drama of the Sengoku period while taking in the panoramic views of the Saijo Basin below. This is a recommended spot not only for history buffs, but also for those who want to enjoy hiking and nature walks.
