In the Nara period (741), by imperial decree of Emperor Shomu, provincial temples were built in over 60 provinces across Japan, and in the ancient province of Aki, one was built here. The ancient temple grounds are designated as a national historic site, and the wooden seated Yakushi Nyorai statue of the Shingon sect Kokubunji temple at the center of the historic site has been designated as an Important Cultural Property of the prefecture, along with the Goma Hall and Niomon Gate, and the principal image of the seated Yakushi Nyorai statue as an Important Tangible Cultural Property of the city.
