This is a place associated with mythology. It is said that Emperor Jimmu (the first emperor) stopped here on his journey to pacify Japan. The Kojiki records that he stayed at Takerinomiya in Aki Province (Akinokuni) for seven years, while the Nihon Shoki records it as Hainomiya. This Takerinomiya or Hainomiya palace of Emperor Jimmu later became this shrine. Additionally, Takeya Shrine is listed in the Engishiki, a legal code from the Heian period, as one of the three great shrines in Aki Province (among the nation's leading shrines), along with Itsukishima Shrine (Itsukushima Shrine) and Hayatani Shrine.
