It was originally located in Higashino and called Nisshozan. During the Kenkyu era (1190-99), it was founded in Nishino, Takehara as Ouchiyama Chozenan, a Tendai sect temple. In 1514, Genchi converted it to Shinshu and called it Chozenji. It is said that it was later moved to its current location in 1874 due to a fire and other reasons. The flags of the battleships of Ishiyama and the list of those killed in battle at Amagasaki Fort are preserved here. This flag was hoisted on the bow of the ship when followers, mainly from the Fujiwara clan, organized the Kihata-gumi, which sent a supply ship with the Mori army to support Ishiyama, at the request of the third head priest, Ensai, during the Ishiyama Battle (1570-80) between Oda Nobunaga and the followers of Honganji. The light yellow hand-woven cotton measuring 88cm in length and 66cm in width is inscribed with the words "Those who advance will go to paradise, those who retreat will go to hell." The Buddhist register states that the names are "among the followers of the Aki Ensai sect of the Kihata group," and lists the 19 people who were killed at Amagaseki Fort in 1577.
