Its mountain name is Gangetsuzan, and it is a Soto Zen temple founded by Ura Munekatsu, lord of Kagi Castle, as his family temple. It is said that the founder was Iten Keiboku. Ura Munekatsu was a member of the Kobayakawa clan, and served as a naval commander for Kobayakawa Takakage during the Ishiyama War (1570-80), when he led the Murakami Navy, earning him the reputation of a fierce general. Temple treasures include a magnificent lacquered palanquin used by the founder, Iten Keiboku, and an ammunition transport storehouse given to Munekatsu by Takakage, and within the grounds remains a memorial tower containing Munekatsu's hair. Kagi Castle is located on Shiroyama along the coast, southwest of Tadanoumi Station, and as its shape resembles the handprint of a key, it came to be called Kagi Castle Ichi Kagi Castle.
