This is the residence of Rai Sanyo's uncle, Rai Shunpu. The building has a samurai-style tenement gate and gate structure, and a doma (traditional Japanese-style room). Rai Shunpu (1753-1825) studied medicine and Confucianism in Osaka, and returned to his hometown in 1773 to set up a medical practice. In 1780, at the end of the Anei era, he started managing salt fields, and in 1781, he built Shunpukan. He handed over the indigo dyeing business to his uncle Dengoro. At the rear of the building is a shrine-style tea room, and the interior is unified in a quirky-style design. The house was burned down in 1854, but rebuilt in 1855, and is now designated as an Important Cultural Property of Japan.
