This ancient temple stands at the summit of Mt. Gokurakuji, 693 meters above sea level and surrounded by primeval fir forests. It is said that Gyoki founded the temple in 731, and later Kobo Daishi opened it. In 1560, Mori Motonari rebuilt the main hall. The main hall is characterized by its beautiful, dynamic lines in the Tang Dynasty style, and has been designated an Important Cultural Property of the prefecture. It also houses a wooden statue of the Great Buddha, measuring 8 meters in height, one of the largest in Japan.
