Hatsukaichi Tenmangu Shrine was founded in 1220, when Fujiwara no Chikazane was appointed by the Kamakura Shogunate as the chief priest of Itsukushima Shrine. After taking up his post at Sakurao Castle in Hatsukaichi, he invited Egara Tenjin Shrine from Kamakura to be the guardian deity in 1233. Later, Hachiman Shrine and Shingu Shrine were enshrined there together, and it became the tutelary deity of Hatsukaichi. Widely known as the god of learning, the shrine is crowded with pilgrims who come to pray for success in various exams. Around the time of Hatsu Tenjin on January 25th, red and white plum blossoms begin to bloom on the approach to Tenmangu Shrine, heralding the arrival of spring. The portable shrine procession during the autumn festival is famous.
