On July 9, 1866 (Keio 2), in the midst of the Choshu War, a samurai from the Shogunate army who was heading to the Choshu army camp as a military envoy was shot by the Choshu army, who mistook him for a combatant. The samurai who fell to the ground crying out "What a shame" was Yoda Banzo, a samurai of the Miyazu clan in Tango. The Choshu army expressed their regret, and the local people mourned his heroic death and built this shrine.
