A vermilion-painted large torii towering over the Seto sea against the backdrop of the green mountains
The Great Torii, the symbol of Miyajima, has been designated an Important Cultural Property by the national government for its original concept of being built underwater, its majestic structure, and its beautiful color and shape. The current torii was built in 1875. The torii is about 16m tall and made from natural camphor wood, standing upright under its own weight just by being placed in the sea. At high tide you can see the great torii floating in the sea, and at low tide you can walk right up to the base of the gate.
