The temple was founded by the monk Ennin during the Jowa era (834-847). The storehouse houses the Namiwake Kannon, a work from the late Heian period that is a nationally important cultural property, and the Gilded Bronze Kannon, the oldest Buddhist statue in Onomichi and a nationally important art treasure. Under the temple grounds is the famous Banryu no Matsu (Pine Tree) (a city natural monument) with branches stretching east to west for about 30 meters. To the left of the main hall is the grave of the 12th Yokozuna Jinmaku Kyugoro, and in front of the grave is a stone monument with a haiku poem carved into it by the Yokozuna himself: "Ukenagara Kaze no Osu Te wo Yanagi ka" (I receive the wind, and the willows are like a willow).
