A temple that represents Onomichi, which holds many important cultural properties
Saikokuji Temple, said to have been founded by Gyoki Bosatsu, is located on the middle slope of Mount Atago, one of the three mountains of Onomichi. Passing through the Niomon Gate, famous for its large straw sandals over two meters long, and climbing 108 stone steps, you will arrive at the Kondo Hall, a National Important Cultural Property. Climbing further stone steps, you will eventually come across the vermilion three-story pagoda (also a National Important Cultural Property) in the Suisho-Ma Room. This pagoda is said to have been donated by Yoshinori, the sixth Ashikaga shogun. The temple is bustling with visitors during the seasons that herald the arrival of the New Year, such as the Saito-goma and Setsubun festivals.
