The founding date is a mystery, but it is said that the current shrine building was rebuilt in March 1665 by the patron and chief donor, Hayashi Saburo Saemon Yoshihisa, and then rebuilt again in December 1780. The approach to the shrine is a major undertaking, with 201 stone steps, which gives an idea of the worship of the local deity at the time. There is a horse racing track within the precincts, where horse races were held until just after the end of the war.
