Fumiko Hayashi is a writer with deep ties to Onomichi. She moved to Onomichi in 1916, and after graduating from Onomichi Girls' High School (now Higashi High School), she moved to Tokyo. She faced many hardships in her quest to become a writer, but in 1929 her novel "Horobiki" became a bestseller and she achieved success as a writer. A statue was erected in honor of the town of literature.
