Japan's oldest existing rebar-built commercial conference hall
Onomichi has prospered as a commercial port city since the Kamakura period. In 1892, the city established its chamber of commerce, the 30th in Japan and the second in the prefecture. In 1923, a stepped assembly hall was built using reinforced concrete, with an open-ceiling structure on the second and third floors, which was rare at the time, and was used as the chamber of commerce until 1971. In 2006, it was restored as the Onomichi Chamber of Commerce Memorial Hall, to be passed down to future generations as a symbol of the commercial city of Onomichi. There is also a tourist information center here.
