Once upon a time, a fisherman living in Onomichi was on his way back from fishing in Shikoku when a traveling monk asked him if he could drop him off wherever his boat landed, and he gladly let him on board. When he dropped him off on the beach of Innoshima, the number of traveling monks he had only been expecting to take increased rapidly, and 88 monks landed one after another. This story was passed on from person to person, and the rumor spread that Kobo Daishi had crossed over to Innoshima. After that, miraculous events continued to occur, so in 1912, all the villages on Innoshima discussed the matter and decided to establish the 88 sacred sites of Innoshima as the island of Shikoku, and all the islanders volunteered to create them. The entire pilgrimage route is 84 kilometers long, and is a popular three-day hiking course. Many pilgrims visit the island of Shikoku to remember the virtues of the great monk, mainly on March 21st of the lunar calendar, and the people of the island welcome them at each temple. Usually, the temples are unmanned and do not have red seals.
