It is 472 meters above sea level. It is the highest peak in the Geiyo Islands and is called Karyuzan by the locals. It is said that this name was derived from the fact that in the heyday of the Seto Inland Sea Navy, a signal fire was used as a means of communication for ship traffic. The Kannon Bodhisattva of the Hotakisan Kannondo Hall enshrined on the summit is said to have been made by the stone monk Gyoki from the Nara period, and this Hotaki Kannon, along with Shirataki Kannon in Shigei-cho, Innoshima, and Kurotaki Kannon in Tadami-cho, Takehara City, are worshiped as the Three Great Kannon of the White, Black and Scarlet Mountains.
