Shingoro Hayashi, who served as deputy chief retainer for the lord of Fukuyama, Abe Ise-no-kami, initiated the construction of Konpira Shrine and came up with the idea of building the largest stone lantern in Japan, which was completed about 160 years ago in December 1841, over a period of about eight years, with the donations of laborers and a donation of 5 kansoku (19 kg) of silver. The stone lantern is 9m high above ground, and its capstone has an area of 7.4㎡ (4.5 tatami mats).
