A cultivar of hornbeam with a very strange shape that grows only in this area in the world.

This rare species of carpinus grows wild in Tahara and Haitani in Oasa, Kitahiroshima-cho, and is characterized by a twisted trunk and drooping branches. Recent research has revealed that the unique shape of this carpinus is the result of a mutation, which is hereditary. There are over 100 of these rare carpinus of various sizes growing here, and there are few places in Japan where trees created by mutations have grown in colonies for generations, making this an extremely valuable region. It was designated a national natural monument in 2000 (Heisei 12). There are over 100 trees. The largest one has a trunk circumference of approximately 4.5m and a height of approximately 12m.
