Opened in the Edo period, this port town was a place to wait for the wind and the tide, and flourished as a port of call for Kitamae ships and trading ships of various feudal lords, and is lined with a wide variety of buildings, from townhouses from the early 18th century to Western-style buildings from the early Showa period.Sights to see in the town include the remains of Wakagosiya (former teahouse site, prefectural historic site), the remains of the Mitarai Shichikyo-raku (prefectural historic site), tall lanterns, Sumiyoshi Shrine (donated by Konoike), Chisakohato (built in the Bunsei era), Kaneko Residence (place where the Mitarai Treaty was signed), Sugawara no Michizane's Well, Manshu-ji Temple (Shingon sect), the stone walls of Manshu-ji Temple (built in the Sengoku period), and Otome-za (a restored former movie theater).
