The main hall was built in 1723, and the worship hall in 1764. According to legend, long ago, a glowing object was seen on the nearby rocks every night, and when a fisherman pulled it up, he discovered it was a statue of Hiruko, which he took home and enshrined, which is said to be how the shrine began.
