symbol of prosperity
Miyoshi Town was developed by Asano Nagaharu, the first lord of the Miyoshi Asano clan, as a castle town where the lord, his vassals and townspeople lived within the same castle grounds, with the river like a natural moat. Remnants of this include key-shaped roads, diagonal roads and parts of old embankments. The streets are paved with granite, and old houses with "udatsu" (rabbit-shaped fences) remain as evidence of the prosperity of the merchants who lined the streets, becoming symbols of the historic townscape. The streets also include a bakery that has been converted into an old townhouse, and a confectionery shop that has been converted into a building that was previously used as a bank.
