A valuable mid-18th century middle-class samurai residence

The former Mekada family residence is designated as an Important Cultural Property by the nation as one of the few remaining mid-class samurai residences from the mid-18th century. Perhaps in anticipation of the Nishiki River overflowing and flooding the Yokoyama area, the residence was built with a second floor, which is rare for a samurai residence, but it has no second-floor windows on the main street side (the entrance side), as consideration was given to not looking down on the road where higher-ranking samurai also passed.
