Dance music is performed during the festival

This is the annual festival of Sanno Shrine, and during the festival, Bugaku is performed. Viewing is free. Bugaku is a form of music (gagaku) and dance that was brought to Japan in ancient times via India, China, and the Korean Peninsula, but no traces of it remain in its birthplace of India, nor in Vietnam, China, or the Korean Peninsula. In the late 12th century, Taira no Kiyomori moved the music venue from Shitennoji Temple in Osaka to Miyajima, and Bugaku was actively performed there. Over 20 pieces, including Ranryo-o, Nasori, Manzairaku, and Engiraku, are still handed down at Itsukushima Shrine today.
