The Ondo Kiyomori Festival, an intangible cultural asset of Kure City and a part of the traditional culture of Ondo Town, is held once every five years. The Kiyomori Festival began as a Nembutsu dance in memory of Taira no Kiyomori, who opened up the Ondo Strait, and evolved into a formal Daimyo procession around the Tenpo era. The festival is famous nationwide for its endless parade of heroic dancers, including those who dig into the straits and those who dress as slaves, incorporating the customs of the time, creating a dazzling Heian picture scroll.
