City Historic Site - Remains of Chinkaiyama Castle Remains of Chinkaiyama Castle = In September 1585, Murakami Takeyoshi and Motoyoshi, father and son, commanders-in-chief of the Mishima Murakami Navy, were driven out of Noshima by Toyotomi Hideyoshi and moved to Takehara in the territory of Kobayakawa Takakage, where they built Chinkaiyama Castle and used it as their base. In 1587, they moved to Najima in Chikuzen, and then to Minojima in Buzen. In 1592, they moved to Otsu County in Choshu. In 1597, they returned to Takehara Chinkaiyama Castle. In 1600, during the Battle of Sekigahara, he led his navy to Mitsugahama in Iyo, but Motoyoshi was killed in battle and the Murakami Navy was defeated and fled back to Takehara. This mountain castle was the base of the Noshima Murakami clan for about six years until they left Takehara and moved to Suo-Yashirojima when the Mori clan moved to Bungo and Choshu in 1601. The castle stands on a small hill jutting out into the city, and is thought to have once been on a cape jutting out into a deep bay. The baileys are lined up in a row to the northwest in about 10 tiers, with the main bailey at an altitude of 88.1m at the center, and the baileys jut out to the southwest into the sea. None of the baileys are clearly defined, with only flattened traces remaining. In the main bailey, there is a stonework of about 3m x 4.5m, and it is said that Shiroyama Shrine was once enshrined there. Grave: To the northwest of the castle ruins, there is a stupa of the castle lord Murakami Motoyoshi, and to the west of that, there are nine five-ringed graves thought to be the graves of those who died in battle.
