A lush observation spot with a historic weather museum, rare cherry blossoms, and a panoramic view of Hiroshima city and the sea
Located on the southwestern edge of Naka Ward, Hiroshima City, this park spreads out on a small hill about 37 meters above sea level. Over time, soil carried by the Ota River piled up, transforming what was once sea into land, a fascinating story that continues to this day. From the top of the mountain, visitors can enjoy sweeping views of the townscape lined with old and new buildings, as well as the calm sea, making this a precious spot where you can still sense the presence of this former island.
Located within the park is the Hiroshima City Ebayama Meteorological Museum, a historic building built in 1934. Originally used as a weather station, it is now a museum where visitors can enjoy learning about the workings of the weather. This building is also known as a "bombed building," having survived the 1945 atomic bombing. The window frames, bent by the blast, remain intact on the walls, playing an important role in conveying history. The museum also features devices that allow visitors to experience the sensations of strong winds, as well as scientific experiments, providing fascinating learning experiences for children and adults alike.
This is where the Hiroshima Ebayamazakura, a natural monument of Hiroshima City, is planted. While most cherry trees have five petals, these cherry trees have an irregular number of petals, ranging from five to thirteen, making them a rare variety that can only be found here in the world. As they bloom a little later than Somei-Yoshino cherry trees, the area is bustling with people who come to enjoy cherry blossom viewing at a different time of year.
In addition to the panoramic view of Hiroshima city, the area also offers a panoramic view of the Seto Inland Sea's many islands, including Aki no Kofuji and Miyajima, making it a scenic spot where locals can relax.
