A map of the arrival of the Korean envoy to Kamioseki (Court of Chosenji)

Memories of the history of Japan-North Korea exchanges

During the Edo period, Kaminoseki Town was an important port for the Hagi domain, with ships passing through, including Kitamae-bune, Kyushu feudal lords on alternate attendance routes, and Korean envoys. This map of arrivals has been designated a UNESCO Memory of the World Heritage Site and a town-designated tangible cultural property, and depicts 10 envoy ships and escorting ships from each domain. There are only a few known drawings in Japan that depict envoy ships entering port, making it an extremely valuable historical document as a record. *A replica is on permanent display at the Kaminoseki Town Cultural Center.
