Sotonoura, which prospered as a port of call for Kitamae ships from the Edo period to the Meiji period, is certified as a Japan Heritage site.

Japan Heritage "Another world woven by the dreams of men who overcame rough waves - Kitamaebune port of call and shipowners' village" Tonoura is attractive for its scenery that has remained unchanged since the Edo period, and still retains a strong sense of being a port of call. The Chugoku Nature Trail has been developed to the "Hiyoriyama Compass Stone," which sailors used to check the wind direction and tide flow, and offers views of the deep bay and the Sea of Japan where men were active.
