A monument to comfort the souls of 352 students and staff members of Hiroshima Daini Junior High School
Date of construction: August 6, 1961 This monument was erected to commemorate the 352 staff and students of Hiroshima Second Junior High School who died in the war and atomic bombing. At the time of the bombing, students and staff who were engaged in building evacuation work in Nakajima Honmachi, 600 meters from the hypocenter, were lined up on the banks of the Honkawa River while giving a speech when the bomb was dropped. Most of them died instantly, and in many cases their remains could not be identified or collected. Next to the monument is a monument bearing a song by former Second Junior High School principal, Sadae Furuta, entitled "If I do not know your words of comfort, I will only cry, remembering your image and love."
