Statue of Peace "Wakaba" (Hideki Yukawa Monument)

A monument inscribed with a song by Dr. Hideki Yukawa praying for peace.

Date of construction: May 9, 1966. This monument bears the poem by Yukawa Hideki, "Magatubi, do not come here again. Only those who pray for peace live here." ("Magatubi" is a god that causes disasters and misfortune.) Dr. Yukawa, Japan's first Nobel Prize winner (Physics Prize), who established the "Meson Theory," was shocked by the American hydrogen bomb test in 1954, and continued to appeal for the abolition of nuclear weapons and war, including hosting the World Conference of Scientists (Pugwash Conference). "I am proud and confident in the pursuit of truth, and I have stuck to it all my life. I have no regrets. But when I heard about the incident on August 6, I realized that scientists have a responsibility to themselves as scientists." (Yukawa Hideki) The bronze statue of a girl and a fawn was created by sculptor Katsuzo Madzuba, who was born in Mitsugi-cho, Hiroshima Prefecture.
