A monument honoring Dr. Marcel Juneau, a medical scientist who worked hard to rescue atomic bomb survivors.
Date erected: September 8, 1979 Dr. Marcel Junod (1904-1961) Swiss medical doctor. On August 9, 1945, the doctor came to Japan as the Chief Representative of the International Committee of the Red Cross in Japan. His initial purpose was to investigate the movements of Allied prisoners of war. However, upon learning of the devastation caused by the atomic bomb, he immediately requested assistance from the Allied Forces Headquarters, and as soon as the war ended, he arrived in Hiroshima on September 8 with the medical supplies he had procured, and while investigating the damage, he also personally treated the victims. This monument was erected to commemorate the doctor's humanitarian efforts in providing relief to the victims of the atomic bomb. In addition to praising his achievements, the back of the monument is engraved with a sentence from one of Junod's books: "Countless cries are crying out for your help."
