The shrine is said to have started with the construction of a memorial hall for Prince Asano Nagamasa. It collapsed due to the atomic bombing, but its reconstruction was completed in 2005.
It is said that the shrine was founded when the 4th lord of the Asano clan, Tsunaga, built a memorial tablet hall for the first lord, Asano Nagamasa, on the west side of the guest hall of Myojoin. The 9th lord of the Asano clan, Naritaka, built a shrine building in the current location in 1835 to enshrine the spirit of the clan's founder, Nagamasa. The shrine was called Futabayama Gosha, but was renamed Nigitsu Shrine in 1873. In 1945, the building collapsed and burned down due to the atomic bomb. In 1984, the main hall and worship hall were restored, and in 2000, the Mukaikaramon Gate, which had been destroyed by the atomic bomb, was restored. The foundation stones are from before the fire. In 2005, the Ryobu Torii gates were restored, completing the post-war reconstruction.
