The family shrine of Mitsuhime, the wife of the second lord of the Asano family. The main hall and the Kuri are nationally designated important cultural properties.

It was founded as Gyoninji Temple by Gyonin, who studied under Nichiren's disciple Nissho. In 1656, it became the family home of Princess Mitsuhime (Jishoin), wife of Mitsuaki, the second feudal lord of the Asano clan, and was renamed Kokuzenji Temple and the temple buildings were remodeled. The main hall and the priests' quarters remain from that time, but the main hall was completed in 1671 and the priests' quarters shortly before that, and both are designated as Important Cultural Properties by the government. The main hall has a double-gabled roof covered with real tiles, with the lower layer being made of plain wood, while the upper layer is entirely plastered from the walls to the pillars and eaves. The priests' quarters has a gabled roof covered with real tiles in two layers, a style known as shikorobuki.
