The magnificent transepts with ten sides on each side and the Zen-style Karamon gate are gorgeous structures characteristic of the early Edo period.
The placement of a Karamon gate with a tangled transept in front of the main shrine is a style seen at Nikko Toshogu Shrine, and Hiroshima Toshogu Shrine was likely modelled on this. The Karamon gate's construction is in the Zen style, as exemplified by its karahafu-style roof. The gables are decorated with intricate openwork carvings. The carvings are brilliantly painted, while the other parts show traces of having been finished with vermilion lacquer. This flamboyant construction is one of the characteristics of the early Edo period. In contrast to the gate, the transept is simply built in a Japanese style. The Karamon gate's imposing size of ten bays (approximately 18m) on both sides and the fact that buildings of this age are rare across the country make it extremely valuable. Date of designation: September 22, 1975. Summary: Karamon gate, one bay, one door, main tile-roofed wing tower, 10 bays across on both east and west sides, one bay deep, single-story, gabled, shingled
