Wooden seated statue of Amida Nyorai (designated important tangible cultural property by the city)

A small, delicate and carefully finished statue of Amida Nyorai

Along the approach to the grounds of Mitakiji Temple, there are many small stone Buddha statues, each with its own expression. After climbing the approach and the final stone steps, one reaches the main hall, where the Amida Buddha statue is enshrined. There are many other Buddha statues in the main hall, including the Kannon Bodhisattva statue, but this statue is quite small, measuring 29cm in height and 50cm including the pedestal. The statue was originally made of inlaid wood and lacquered with gold leaf, but most of this has now peeled off. The robe is draped over the shoulders, and the statue is seated on a lotus throne with its hands folded in the meditation mudra, which is common for Amida Buddha statues. The halo and pedestal are also carefully carved with intricate detail, making this a fine statue, despite its small size. Date of designation: February 18, 1974. Summary: Inlay wood construction, lacquer leaf, statue height 29cm, knees 22.5cm, pedestal height 26cm, halo diameter 20cm
