Umajirushi (*), also written as "baken", was made to indicate the location of a general on the battlefield. A conspicuous ornament was attached to the end of a long handle and was held by an attendant in front of or next to the general's horse as a landmark. This umajirushi (*) is said to have been used by Asano Yoshinaga, older brother of Asano Nagaakira, the first lord of the Asano clan of Hiroshima Domain, when he dispatched troops to Korea.
