Ruins of the Kumagai clan Takamatsuyama Castle Ruins (prefectural historic site)

A castle that the Kumagai clan made into their base, taking advantage of the steepness and the view.

The achievements of Kumagai Naokuni, who was killed in the Jokyu Incident (1221), were recognized by the Kamakura Shogunate, and his son Naotoki was appointed as the land steward of Saniri Manor in Aki Province. Naotoki was appointed to this area from Musashi Kumagaya-go (present-day Kumagaya City, Saitama Prefecture), and built Ise-ga-tsubo Castle to strengthen the defenses of the manor. After that, the Kumagai clan, whose power gradually increased, built a castle on the strategically superior Takamatsuyama and made it their base. Takamatsuyama, which stands 339 meters above sea level, is not only steep, but also has great views of the surrounding area, making it the perfect place for the Kumagai clan, who were about to make a great leap forward. Takamatsu Castle served as the main castle of the Kumagai clan until Kumagai followed Mori Terumoto and moved to Hiroshima in 1591.
