Hatchobori's representative shopping street lined with brand shops and long-established specialty stores
This shopping street is representative of "Hachobori", the center of Hiroshima city. It is adjacent to other shopping streets and large stores on the north, south, east and west sides, so it can be said to be a "node". It is L-shaped with an east-west street (84m, 10m wide) and a north-south street (179m, 11m wide), and coexists with three large stores: "Fukuya" to the east, two "Parco" stores to the south, and "Tokyu Hands" to the north across Aioi-dori. The stores mainly sell fashion items, and the brand shops and long-established specialty stores are popular with a wide range of age groups. Since the Edo period, shops have been lined up as part of the "Saigoku Kaido", a transportation hub, but when "Fukuya", Hiroshima's first department store, opened in 1929, it was named "Kinza-gai" with the enthusiasm of "aiming to become a town that surpasses Tokyo's Ginza". In 1994, the "Crystal Arcade", a rare glass structure in the country, was completed and is loved by locals as an "Atrium of Light and Flowers".
