A historic gourmet and fashion town dating back to the time Hiroshima Castle was built.
Nakanotana Shopping Street is a shopping street consisting of five streets, surrounded by Aioi-dori (Train Street) and Hondori/Kinza-gai, near Hatchobori in the center of Hiroshima, and is a "gourmet and fashion street." There are delicious restaurants, stylish boutiques and beauty salons. This place was known as "Uonotana (store/shelf)" because of the place name "Higashi Uoya-cho" (East Fish Market) where fish wholesalers gathered since the construction of Hiroshima Castle. In 1619, fish markets were established in Nishi Uoya-cho (near present-day Fukuro-cho) and Kyobashi-cho, so the street came to be called "Nakano-tana" (middle shelf) meaning the store in the middle of the three fish markets. Since it became Nakanotana Shopping Street, the streets have been improved, with uniquely designed street lamps lined up, the road surface is paved with red granite, the Nakanotana logo is painted at the intersections, and the part in the middle of the road designed with pinkoro stones to represent a river is paved with polished stones and stones with fish drawings, creating a comfortable space where visitors can walk and enjoy. Events held in the shopping arcade include the Nakano Tana Unki Wo Agen Festival in June, the Autumn Hospitality Campaign in September and October, and participating in the Hiroshima Light-up Project from November to January.
